About LifeWays

Our days at LifeWays are designed to create a balance between free, creative play and more structured activities such as practical life skills, meals and story time.

Children experience the Creative Arts through coloring with natural beeswax crayons, watercolor painting, and seasonal crafts. They learn practical Life Skills such as cooking, cleaning, woodworking, repairing and gardening. Each child receives individual attention through the Nurturing Arts of hair brushing, face washing, and other warm, relationship-building experiences with his or her primary caregiver. And every day, children practice the Social Arts in our unique, mixed-age environment, where children gain experience in practicing empathy, kindness, sharing, and conflict resolution.
Daily Rhythm

Our daily rhythm also provides a balance between active times and rest times thereby nourishing each child's sense of health and well-being. Our typical day looks like this:

7:30 a.m.–9 a.m.
Creative, free play, along with practical work (cleaning, baking, laundry folding) or creative arts (gift making, painting, coloring)

9 a.m.
Morning snack – usually consists of an organic, whole grain along with fruit, dairy or nut butter
Children clear and wash their own dishes.

9:45 or 10:00 a.m.
Outdoor play, which includes time spent playing in the sandbox in our fenced play yard, working in our organic garden, or taking a nature walk through the beautiful wooded nature preserve.

11:30 a.m.
Back inside, children get ready for lunch.  On cold days, this time may include a warm foot bath with lavender essential oil or a circle time with songs and stories.

Hot, organic, home-cooked lunch
Children help clean the dining area and wash their own dishes.

12:45 p.m.
Nap preparation begins, with warm face cloths, toothbrushing, and tucking in with a story and lullabies sung by the child’s primary caregiver. LifeWays’ media-free environment allows for this personal connection of story and song instead of recordings.

1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Siesta Time

3:00 p.m.
Children begin to rouse.  They fully awaken as they enjoy a nurturing lap time while their caregiver brushes their hair, and they help to make their beds and put their sleeping cots away for another day.

3:30 p.m.
Snack Time
Children clear and wash their own dishes.

4:00-5:30 p.m.
In the warm months from April to October, the children enjoy outdoor play until they are picked up by their parents.  During the winter months, the children may spend this time playing indoors.

5:30 p.m.

Paradise Farm, a farm education program in West Bend, offers LifeWays families an opportunity to help grow organic produce for the children’s lunch table.
